It's been a while...

My how time flies during basketball season, good or bad. When a season starts with drama, one should take that a sign for things to come. But that's ok. I'm over it and on to the next big thing. No really, I am. I know what I learned, where I failed, where I perservered and what my successes were. And yes, even though we lost every game...there were successes.

It became obvious right from the start that this was going to be a tough season. There were tears, triumphs, moments to smile and reasons to cheer. We went from losing by 50 points to losing by 4 points in overtime....and that is a success! We went from getting 5 points in a game to 25! And that's a success! I learned that I need to coach by my Gut Instict...not listen to others and be talked or bullied into things. I am the Head Coach and everyone else needs to live by my decisions...and deal with it. Male or not.

There were many fantastic moments....watch my team at the end was like watching an entirely different group of players. In the end, I was proud of these girls, but I was also exhausted. Do I have regrets....like Quinn Keast.....No Regrets. Only moments of realization and affirmations!

What now? On to the next things....I am the Head Coach for the Delbrook Steve Nash U13 Girls Metro team....gonna go coach at a Provincial Tourney....so excited. I promise....next time it won't take so long. I have many positive things coming up to write about.

Have a fabulous day!!!

October 17th

Well, the Steve Nash Basketball is well under way. It was a very buys start and a little chaotic at moments...but everything is good now. I have 35 fabulous Referees and am looking forward to following their progress over the season.

As for my basketball team...we have had steady progress and after a break from games on Thanksgiving Weekend I have both high hopes and expectations for our next game on Saturday. There are only 4 teams in our division and we are playing another league that has only one team in the same age division. So every 4th week we play 2 games. We are now at the point of repaeating all the team s we've played. We lost our first game by 6 pts, lost the next game by 7 pts and then won the next game by 12 pts and won our last game by 22 pts. Not bad. My team won't go undefeated like last years team, but it's not the same team-just the same division.

I attended a coaching clinic on Wednesday night way out in Surrey at Queen Elizabeth, the Facilitator was Scott Clarke, the men's Head Coach at SFU. It was a pretty good clinic. I learned a bit and it's always nice to get some affirmation that I'm on the right track with my coaching style and philosophy...not that I was questioning my coaching ability.

Outside of coaching, I am still in a job search and am very busy workin on my vision board and reading books about college coaches. I just finished Kim Mulkey's (Baylor) book, Teams, Dreams and Family. I really enjoyed it, finishingly it quickly. I picked up some great ideas and concepts from the book. One of them being that she has a journal she writes favorite quotes in. She puts the quotes up on the board before games, etc... so over the years she has collected many quotes. I like that idea and I have the Perfect little journal for that. A little Build A Bear Journal...awwww!

So that's it for now. I am hoping to update this MUCH more frequently now that our Steve Nash season is underway....keeping in mind that the high school season starts on Nov 7th with Open Gym/try-outs. Yay! I was able to write as much earlier I consumed an energy drink and then promptly fell asleep right away and slept for atleast an hour or more. And now I am pretty awake. Ironic isn't it?

2 more sleeps...

Two more sleeps until I coach my first game of the 2008/09 Season. I can't wait to see what my team can do. I have been working hard on our game plan and goals for the first game. I may not be able to sleep Friday night and I will be bouncing off the walls at work....at Build A Bear Workshop, a good place to be when one is all excited.

I made a new bear today, to celebrate the success of getting my first pay cheque for coaching basketball. Yes, a very important occassion, worthy of a grand celebration.

I love coaching practices, but it's the adrenaline rush of coaching a game and all the strategizing and team building that I really love.

Well, it's off to sleep after a fabulous day. I spent most of the day with my friend Michelle and her very adorable daughter, who makes me giggle-a lot. Then at Build a Bear tonight I got my 1 year certificate and a very cute new bear to celebrate my 1 year anniversary at Build a Bear, better late than never as I have actually been there at least 1.5 years.

Well, that's it for another day.

The Steve Nash Season is underway...

It is official, basketball has begun for the Delbrook Steve Nash Youth League in North Van. On Saturday I held my first of what will be 2 Referee Clinics this season and I am excited. Though they were an extremely quiet group, I believe this will be another successful season. 18 Rookies attended my Referee program and many of the Senior Referees were there to "help".

The time went quickly, atleast for me. The attendees may have some different to say on the subject. Interestingly, less girls showed up this year. Usually it's almost evenly divided, but this year it's mostly guys. I am very excited to get to the practical training component and developing my new referees, as well as challenging the Juniors and the Seniors.

I'm sure it is going to be another season full of eventful moments, good laughs (those hilarious gr 4/5's) and a frustrating moment or two with the gr 8/9 girls. All in all, I am excited about a new season full of possibility. I am done recruiting for this year.....but by November I will be keeping an eye out for next years Superstar Potentials.

Our first games are this weekend, but we stagger the start of each age group, so it's only the 8/9's I have to worry about-and even then, I coach a gr 8/9 girls team, so I will be there.

Yes, it has been a busy week. The Ref Clinic was on Saturday, on Monday I received my Team Roster for my 8/9 Girls and we had our first practice on Tuesday. I really enjoy working with the Referees, but coaching is where my heart really is. I love coaching. I have 11 girls on my team and as usual, mostly guards, which means I have to get at it and quickly turn a few of those guards and undecided's into Post Players. We covered most of the basics in practice and I taught a new hi-level drill that they will be using to warm up with.

The team has a lot of potential, but they need to pick up their work habits a little if they want to survive high school try-outs. I am really looking forward to coaching the team and seeing how we do. Of course we have a tough act to follow, my team last year went undefeated....not that i expect the same results, it's mostly a different team and I don't want to put that much pressure on them.

But I do expect them to work hard and do their absolute best. I have expectations that are just as high for myself, or even higher.

Thus I have ordered some new books to read....1-4 Motion Offense and Kim Mulkey's Book (the Baylor Women's Coach) . Just a little light reading as the season begins.

It was such a treat to be able to watch Baylor play up here against SFU and even better, a couple of moments to chat with Coach Kim. I sat in the stands with the Baylor Crowd and I don't for a second feel bad about that. I wasn't being disloyal to my own "hometown" team, I was celebrating the competition for coming all this way on a long weekend to play. lol. It really was a fabulous way to really "kick off" the start of the Steve Nash Youth Basketball Season.

I also went back to SFU the following day to see LSU. Interestingly, while LSU (Baton Rouge) was up here playing against SFU, UBC and TWU, Hurricane Gustav was battering the city of Baton Rouge. Sitting there watching the game and seeing a constant blur of Purple and Gold made it almost a little difficult to concentrate. I was thinking about New Orleans and checking CNN on my phone often for updates on the storm, worried about my friends who had chosen to stay in New Orleans to help after the storm.

And with that, I am off to finish reading my "Geno" book, for the 2nd time-looking for a little inspiration from my all-time favorite College Coach. I want to finish the book before my other 3 books arrive next week. Atleast I have a lot of reading to keep me entertained on the buses as I travel around the city for Basketball.

Basketball....the season has begun....yayyyy!

Bball Season, Again!

It is September and I anxiously await the start of basketball season. After New Orleans I kept myself busy and entertained by volunteering at Theatre Under the Stars all summer. Volunteering in the Theatre is a lot like being around basketball people. Focused, fun, loud and a little crazy. I miss all my Theatre Friends, but I am glad that BBall season is just around the corner....atleast for the Steve Nash Youth League.

Saturday is the Referee Training Clinic I put on for all my Referees in the League. As Referee Coordinator, I like to work on recruiting Referees, as well as taking on Players from the League. I look forward to training a new group of Referees, as well as the return of last years Referees.

As a coach in the Steve Nash League, I have a tough job ahead of me. Last year my team went undefeated, which caused a little controversy. But that's ok, I know that there are games the team would have lost if they had had a weaker coach and I take pride in that. I look forward to a new season of challenges. That's all for the moment....

New Orleans...

I have been back from New Orleans for about a week and a half now and I miss it. What was I doing in New Orleans? Volunteering with the rebuilding efforts still so badly needed in the Greater NOLA area. Each summer I organize a trip for people to go down and volunteer. Usually I take about 20 people with me.

But the trip isn't just all about working hard and volunteering...I make sure that everyone experiences the culture....sights, sounds, tastes and smells of New Orleans. It's all about interacting with the people we are helping. And what a week it was this year. Wow! This is the first year to bring a group of adults (last year it was a mix group of adults and youth) and it allowed a little more freedom, so to speak. It was also a new experience for me as last year I was one of the Youth Leaders.

We arrived in New Orleans Saturday night and had a quiet evening at the hotel, perhaps one of the last sane moments of the trip! Bekah and I sat up on our computers at the hotel and chatted until we were both exhausted enough to sleep!

Sunday: Check out of Laquinta Hotel (New Orleans East) and load up the Vans, then it was off to church in the 9th Ward at Noah's Ark Missionary Baptist Church. This church recently received a brand new building compliments of Extreme Makeover Home Edition. We were given a tour by Pastor Willie before the service. It was god to see Pastor Willie again and celebrate the beautiful new building. Last year when we attended services, it was in a borrowed building as their previous building had been completely destroyed. My Pastor, Todd, was again invited to sit up on the stage with Willie and be a part of the service. I think that is so cool. After the service and a few team photos it was back into the Vans (and Volvo) and then off to Sonic Drive-In out in the Chalmette area, for lunch. Sonic is one of those things you just have to do in New Orleans...well, one of many things! After everyone ordered, ate, changed and played with waterguns, we were off to our Airboat Tour.
I wasn't so sold on the idea of Airboats, but I'll take any opportunity to hold a baby Alligator! Awww. But I have to admit, the Airboats were fun and the scenery was fantastic....and let's keep in mind that scenery doesn't generally impress me, unless we're talking concrete, city lights and bridges. But all that swampy stuff was kinda cool! But really the big highlight was feeding marshmallows (swamp crack) to the Gators! Then after the Airboats it was over to St Bernard Parish (via ferry, no thanks to Belinda, the crazy GPS system). We basically crawled out of the Vans, checked into Camp Hope and then got back in the Vans without unpacking. Then it was back into New Orleans, via the 9th Ward to meet Willie at his church to go for dinner. We went to a restaurant of his choice, Deanie's Seafood, on his recommendation that we should all enjoy some spectacular New Orleans Seafood. There were 23 of us and we were divided up into 2 groups. Jen, Todd and I sat with Willie and had a great time listening to his account of Post Katrina New Orleans and our fabulous waiter Chris had stories of his own. The other group sat with friends of Willie's, 3 guys that ended up in New Orleans thanks to Sean Penn and a plea for volunteers to help at Willie's church. That was 2 months ago in May and a few of the 150 respondents had remained in New Orleans and had become part of Willie's congregation. Very cool. After a fabulous dinner, we said good-night to Willie, with promises of seeing him again before we left. Then it was back out to Camp Hope and this time we brought in our luggage, rather noisily, disturbing our poor room mate Patty, who actually turned out to be really cool and lots of fun!
Monday we checked in at the St Bernard Project in St Bernard Parish for our assignments for the week and our volunteer orientation. Emily, the Vol Coordinator is great and we really enjoyed the stories and demographics that Zack shared with us. Zack and Liz are fabulous. Then it was off to work. While I was desperately hoping for a gutting project....no such luck. It was to be a week filled with mold remediation. Wire brushing....would you rather....
That first work day was the only work day we encountered one of those NOLA storms, complete with crazy lightening. And oh yeah, in grand NOLA, tradition-I injured myself. This time legitimately...not in some vain attempt to look cute. It was tough work adjusting to the heat and I commend those who took on wire brushing the attic. Trying to keep hydrated was a huge chore. We did a run for coolers, water, gatorade and POPSICLES (as well as some basic medical supplies). At the end of the day we headed back to Camp Hope for dinner where rumor had it that Salt of Salt and Peppa fame was staying at Camp Hope with her church from Brooklynn, NY. Ok, so how cool is that?
Then after dinner-and showers, we were off to Target back in Jefferson to buy Towels for the New Orleans Mission, School Supplies for kids in the 9th Ward and some work site supplies (ipod speakers, awards, etc...). Then it was off to bed for a very tired crew for some much needed and appreciated sleep.
Tuesday we motored through our work site in record time and got our part done ahead of schedule. Tuesday night was kind of a chill night after one of the Service Projects kind of fell apart. The food at Camp Hope wasn't really workin for me, so we went off in search of real food and I had Alligator Sausage and Sweet Potatoe Fries for dinner-yummy. This is also the night we discovered the Drive-Thru Daiquiri Stand. Sweet. I had that 190 Antifreeze that our waiter had gone on about, luckily I didn't order the extra shot, that would've sent me right off the deep end. wow! Back to Camp Hope. I was heading off to bed when things got a little crazy...Vince was ill and it only took a few minutes to realize we needed to get him to the hospital and get him looked at. Thanks to Belinda, our GPS system with attitude, we were able to search for a hopsital quickly. Even though there were 27,000 homes in st Bernard Parish and people had begun moving home....there wasn't enough people living there yet to re-open a grocery store, never mind a Hospital. Things we totally take for granted in our everyday lives here are a luxury in SBP. WE had to drive 35 minutes back into New Orleans to the Tulane Medical Centre. Vince was very well taken care of. Due to his dehydration and needing to take care of him right away, they sent him in the back to the Paediatric Emerg. 3 pouches of liquid later through an IV and we could take Vince back to Camp Hope....then the 6 of us went to bed (for the day) at 6am. Jen, Todd and I surfaced around Noon and headed for lunch, but our boys from Bethel were still sleeping soundly.
Then it was off for a night of Fun to celebrate Brittany's birthday, so were off to Lakeside Mall...and unbeknownst to them....BUILD-A-BEAR-WORKSHOP!!! That was very cool! But more about that tomorrow, I need to get some sleep1

Day One

Welcome to my spot. There are about 5 weeks (approximately) until the 2008/09 basketball season begins....well, atleast for the Delbrook Steve Nash Basketball League. But I don't have to wait that long to Coach, as I am running the Basketball Camp at the NS N'hood house in August. That's going to be cool.

But like the title says-"Adventures of a Basketball Coach", this is a blog about me, a basketball coach and my adventures in life. Now, those of you who know me, know that Basketball is pretty much my life. However, I do do other things, to keep a balance in my life-or atleast attempt to.

Take for instance, this is the end of July, which for the moment in my world, is considered the basketball "off-season". And so I must keep myself amused in the off-season, not such an easy task for someone with a high-energy level like mine. So for the past couple of seasons I have been keeping myself busy with volunteering-one of my other passions. I am currently volunteering at TUTS (Theatre Under the Stars) at Malkin Bowl in Stanley Park. At TUTS I "work" in the Coffee Bar, selling Tea, Coffee and Hot Chocolate before the show and during intermission. If you need to kill some time this summer, I highly recommend volunteering at TUTS. You'll meet a lot of fantastic people and learn alot, if you take the initiative.

But most importantly I just returned home from New Orleans a week ago. In the summer I take a group of volunteers down to New Orleans to volunteer in the rebuilding efforts-Post Hurricane Katrina. Outside of coaching....this is the coolest thing I do. But at the moment I am tired and I am going to leave it until tomorrow to go into detail about the amazing week I had in N'Awlins....
